Gourd is known as "Mate" in Peru and it is the oldest and most traditional example of Peruvian handcraft.
Largenaria is the main type of gourd grown and harvested. This type is not edible and solely grown for decorative purposes. The weather conditions of the Andes contribute to its hard shell that is similar to wood.
This beautiful Eagle design has been hand chisel and burn, in a process similar to wood burning. The vary shades of black, orange and brown are due to the pressure and time of application heated metal used in the burning process.
